I'm linking up with Teaching Maddeness for the Friday Flashback linky party:
This week we had a school-wide mock election.  K-2 students voted on President/Vice-President, while 3-8 voted on everything (Pres/VP, Senator, and Propositions).
My kids were so excited!  I overheard some great discussions on why they were voting for a certain candidate......it was great knowing the kids were talking about this with their parents at home.
Here's a quick shot of the bulletin board for our election:
I will be adding to it between now and election day.  I'm super thankful to have won Just Wild About Teaching's Election Craftivity (all pictures below from Just Wild About Teaching).  I'll be using these activities to keep up all of the excitement about the election.

In math, we just started our unit on 2-digit addition.  We began by playing Race to 50 and Race to 100.  I downloaded this freebie from Erin at Tales from Room 112:

My kiddos love playing this game.  I love the ten frames in the ones place to really help them understand that they need 10 to regroup!
I need bring my camera to school more often to take more pictures because I feel like we did a lot of fun activities this weekend, but I have nothing to show you!
Also, don't forget about Hilary's Rockin' Giveaway!  It ends tonight at midnight and there might be some surprises in store for more than 1 lucky winner!

I love how bloggers have regular posts/theme days.  So I'm going to try to do that by starting a "What's Workin' Wednesday" post.

I plan to share what's working in my classroom.  Everything from classroom management, routines/procedures, activities, lessons, just about anything that's working in my room!

So, what's working this week?  Yesterday my kids finished a unit on place value.  One of the things they loved doing was playing scoot!

I just found this game this summer thanks to the wonderful world of blogging!  I introduced it a while back when we were studying synonyms and antonyms.  It was a big hit!  So I made these scoot cards to go with our place value unit:

My kiddos loved using these to review basic place value concepts (standard form, expanded form, finding the value of a certain digit, and identifying specific digits in numbers).  Here's a sample of some of the cards:

What's even great, after we played scoot I left the recording sheet and the cards on the counter and the kids began to use them as a fast finisher activity at their desks!  Guess they really loved it too!

My goal is to make these for more of the topics we cover in second grade.  Such a great way to review and reinforce skills and concepts!
Sorry for the double posts today, but there's so much going on right now in the blogging world.......I love it!

Now for the linky:
Michelle, aka The 3AM Teacher, is celebrating her 1 year bloggiversary!  She's having a linky party to reflect on a favorite memory from your first year as a blogger.
I'm still in my first year of blogging and I absolutely love it.  A favorite memory of mine has been sharing my blog with my coworkers.  Last week, a coworker of mine told me he was searching different second grade blogs and found one with a ton of cool stuff and then he noticed the pictures from the room and realized it was my room!  He said my blog looked great and was impressed with what I was sharing.  It made me feel so good!  Thanks blogging world for helping me get more creative and hands on in my classroom!

Now for the freebie:
First off, thanks for reading through all this and getting to the bottom of this post!
My kiddos studied plural nouns last week so I made this sorting activity to use in a literacy center/as a fast finisher activity to review and reinforce this skill.  There are 30 sorting cards, 5 header cards, and a recording sheet.  Click on the picture to pick it up from my TpT store.

Casey at Second Grade Math Maniacs and a ton of other fabulous second grade bloggers have created a new blog:

My school is one of the many that uses Accelerated Reader (AR).  Last year, the computer in my room wouldn't let the kids take tests so we only were able to take them in the computer lab.  This year, my classroom computer is ready to rock and roll and I really want to better motivate my students to work hard and achieve their AR goals.

To help them do this, I created this All-Star AR packet:

The first thing I did was give my students this card so they would know their current reading level:

My students have this log to record their goals, books read, and points earned:
When they finish reading a book they can sign up to take a test using this sign up form:
I was finding out that my kids would get to the computer and not remember their title so I made sure to put the title on the sign up sheet so when they are at the computer they can refer to it instead of having to go back to their seats to get the book.
I have my computer supervisors monitor the sign up sheet.  They help get the kids logged in and notifiy the next student when it's their turn (one less thing I have to worry about!)

When students finish taking the test, they fill out this test ticket:
I have them put the completed ticket in a bucket near the computer and I use these to check their progress.  Sometimes I'll draw a name out and give a reward for getting a passing score.

To help motivate students to keep reading and earning points, I have stars with ribbons hanging down (sorry I didn't take a picture of this in my class).  I attach these points tags to their ribbons:

So far my kids are loving AR and are really motivated to read and earn points.  When they reach a goal or get a 100%, I give them a certificate:

This system has allowed me to better monitor my students regarding their reading and points and also keep AR a prominent part of the classroom (I'll post pictures of the displays next week).

This 64 page packet also includes a pennant banner to display the points (you can attach clothespins to the different points totals), 5 different certificates in 2 versions, punch cards, and Hall of Fame recording sheets (I use these when students fill up their punch cards).

Click {HERE} to head to my store to check it out!

If you use AR, I'd love to hear how you manage it and keep it going.  If you'd like the chance to win this product, please leave me a comment about AR.  I'll pick 2 winners using the random number generator on Monday!
